What is Y2K ?
The full name of Y2k is “Year 2000 Kilo “.
The term originally had nothing to do with fashion, but came from a worldwide computer crash. In 2000, the Year 2000 Problem broke out, which caused a lot of problems for all programmers. The crisis was eventually resolved, but a mixture of admiration and fear for technology began to grow, creating an imaginative “futuristic aesthetic” for the turn of the millennium. That’s why a lot of the Y2K aesthetics we see today have digital and electronic elements.

We can still experience the joy of people in the middle of 20-to-21 century by reviewing this video.
Broadly speaking, Y2K refers to the pre-millennium pop culture, which peaked between 1993 and 2003 with optimism and techno-utopianism at its core. And aesthetics from the above explanation about Y2K can directly understand translation aesthetics for 2000, but not all the time appear aesthetic can define Y2K aesthetics, the main core is the sense of science and technology, and the human environment at the time about thefuture of the development of science and technology could have come out some things created by the suspect.
Internet just started at that time, science and technology electronics industry started under the background of development and interest in science and technology feeling, to computer Internet UI and electronic products, formed a distinct unique design style, the style is gradually extending to the fashion and design field, become the label of culture.
Y2K aesthetics is visually gorgeous and surrealistic, with an exaggerated and bold style and a sense of future technology. Under the influence of the environment at that time, there were many eye-catching innovations in different fields, such as film, music and fashion, resulting in many pioneering aesthetic products that continue to this day.

“Around the same time, The British rock band Radiohead released its fourth studio album, Kid A, and experimented with the Internet and other technologies as they wrote, often slicing and dicing lyrics and grammar into random combinations. Thom Yorke became interested in synthesizer sounds, and the band began recording using computer software like Pro Tools and Cubase. “Technology gives us all the possibilities, and the possibilities are endless.” In 2000, Gorillaz released their first EP. In Japan, the 1980s was a chaotic, rapidly growing, and exuberant era. Along with the development of economy, the popularity of ‘Bōsōzoku’ (Mob) was climbing to the peak in dramatic way. It can be classified as Japanese youth subculture associated with customized motorcycles, which was filled with vigour, violence and rebel. They always weared their “bosozoku”-style uniform, and add modifications on their motorcycles. These young generations eager for attention of society in order to tell everyone that they were proud of themselves. I was fascinated by their inexhaustible energy and tough character through several documentaries and movies, the emotion of self-expression can be addictive for anyone,It’s just that people learn to endure as they grow older. These teenagers, only 16 or 17 years old, eager to become what they think of as adults, they smoked, drunk, fought with others, and were uninhibited. At the same time, they stipulated that every member must leave the organization when they were 20 years old* .The trueform under the cover of clamor showed unwilling to the life with dulled grayness and ordinariness, everyone knew that eventually they would back to normal, these four or five years were as if the youth they could live the most incisively and vividly throughout the rest of life.
The Tokyo Revengers
“After becoming an adult, and leading a normal life, I can’t help but remember those times. The excitement I got from just living life will never be the same.”
The first time I watched this video is 2 years ago, I was experiencing a depressing period of my life due to the fact that I transferred to another high school in an entirely new city, I got no friends and my family members were always situated in Beijing, loneliness changed me become more vulnerable than before. Then, the bosozoku induced me.The leader in this videos showing bunch of aware and honest about their actions really hits me. Based on my personal background I lived through these 17 years, it is impossible let me say the words”I want to join them ” .It is totally true that their kind of lifestyle will germinate lots of hidden risk to society, but they did enjoy it so much enough for me to respect them and such subculture.

AKIRA
After I did research about the birth of bosozoku, there’s a vital element prompting the rapid development of it which is called the “Economic Bubbles”,it occurs due to unrealistic expectation regarding its future, a rise in their value is not sustainable for long periods and the result is a sudden and steep price drop. Japanese citizens’ dream of life, just like a bubble burst in an instant. In this case, it leads me to remember a famous animation movie called “Akira” due to their similar background of history, in Japan.
Set in a dystopian 2019, Akira tells the story of Shōtarō Kaneda, a leader of a biker gang whose childhood friend, Tetsuo Shima, acquires incredible telekinetic abilities after a motorcycle accident, eventually threatening an entire military complex amid chaos and rebellion in the sprawling
futuristic metropolis of Neo-Tokyo.
The main character, hōtarō Kaneda ,leading his vigilante bosozoku gang ,I was impressed with his all-red assault suit and his red motorcycle.
In this film, Otomo Katsuyo constructed a society full of dystopian colors. In 2019, 31 years later, Tokyo was rebuilt after a catastrophe, below the prosperity of “Neo Tokyo” was full of ubiquitous ugliness. Economic depression, social and political unrest, the city was plunged into unprecedented revolutionary riots. With brawls between small gangs and clashes between demonstrators and the police and army, Neo Tokyo seems decadent in all but violence. This kinds of setting reminds me of cyberpunk elements , also be embodied visually on the screen.
This fast-paced, big-screen, emotionally insane animation is peppered with deep musings on humans and society, and the riddled “Neo Tokyo” expresses his distaste for absolute domination and order. The terrifying display of power shown by “Akira” in the film also conveys a fear of the unknown realms of science, and a fear of the weakness of human will.
Yoshitaka Amano
Yoshitaka Amano is a Japanese artist, character designer, illustrator and a theater and film scenic designer and costume designer.
Early works painted by Yoshitaka Amano for games and animations
The first time I was exposed to the realm of Yoshitaka Amano was when I was 16 years old, which was similar to his age when he first contacted the animation industry. Although he was cultivated under the Japanese culture, his keen interest in exploring western fantasy never faded away. When he had the opportunity to paint covers for some books, he began to immerse himself in his own fantasy world that was created in his brush. One point of Yoshitaka Amano that resonates with me is that instead of being bound by any form, he would shape every character meticulously in the process of painting. I admire that he keeps thinking about himself and his work during his creation in the past years, from character design at the initial stage to being an illustrator now. He insists on expressing himself in his works with a humble attitude towards creation while constantly combining the unique style of other artists. I suppose this is what his style is. This is what I am looking forward to myself in the future.
The most fascinating series of his work is called “Devaloka”. He used very bright colors, while the pictures were full of fantastical and different monsters also beautiful girls , creating strong visual impact to audience , it let me associate them with the frames in “Akira”.
Devaloka
Devaloka transfer me chaotic and confrontational feelings . The girls in face to monsters with fearless , stretching in a certain position of the images of their body, the monsters around them but did not dare to come forward to. I feel their uninhibited attitude, they also show their superior appearance generously to the outside world, I think they share the same traits with those youthful bosozoku.
Candy Girl
Candy Girl is set to be 15-17 years old, a teenage Girl during a brief transition from Girl to adult. For Amano, girlhood is a wonderful period in women’s life. The world of Candy Girl is like a universe where time has stopped. The expressions, clothes, hairstyles and every move of girls are not only artistic expressions, but also the manifestation of their individuality. The colorful life shows that I am a young girl forever.
“Yoshitaka Amano’s style are very diversed , such as classical, enchanting, stream of consciousness, and candy girl is bright beautiful pop art style. Amano presents strong appetite for pop art through focusing in this series, he personally build this group of metal aluminum plates with each candy girl, those quaint figure, high saturation of the color are pleasing, It presents Amano’s understanding and expression of this new world of light and shadow.” — Yicang Art Museum
Plan for next step
The theme of my project should be the the awakening of “courage” consciousness of nowadays young generations group. I collected three groups of Cultures and Styles situated in 3 different stages of period which are: Y2K style ( at the beginning of 21 century ), Candy Girl painted by Yoshitaka Amano ( at the transition period from the start to middle of 21 century) and the elements from Akira ( at the end of a century) to show their common perception “ be brave enough to express their thoughts and emotions to society, and full of curiosity and desire to explore in those minds all the time.”
Candy girl reminds me to focus on the expressions in one’s eyes, in the next step I will collect close-ups of different people’s eyes, especially those with high spirits from social media and life.
For Akira, Collect elements of colors and figures such as the motorcycle, poses, bright opposite colors, composition, music, cyber punk environment (eg. fight machine, bombs, flame, music, buildings, hologram) all showing the rebellious attitude to the chaos and decay of society roughly .
